Consequences of Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a serious academic offense. If you are caught plagiarizing, you may receive a failing grade on the assignment, be placed on academic probation, or even be expelled from school.

How to Avoid Plagiarism

There are a few things you can do to avoid plagiarism:

  • Always cite your sources. Whenever you use someone else's words or ideas, be sure to cite the source in your text and in your bibliography.
  • Put quotations around direct quotes. If you are quoting directly from another source, be sure to put the quoted text in quotation marks.
  • Paraphrase carefully. If you are paraphrasing someone else's work, be sure to put the paraphrased text in your own words and cite the source.
  • Proofread your work carefully. Before you submit any assignment, be sure to proofread it carefully to make sure that you have cited all of your sources.

If You Have Plagiarized

If you have plagiarized, the best thing to do is to come forward to your instructor and explain the situation. Your instructor may be willing to work with you to correct the plagiarism and submit a revised assignment.
